As a 12-year-old, I remember struggling with the death of my grandmother who was an incredibly important person in my life. However, in the 90s and in Mexico, kids weren’t allowed to grieve or say their goodbyes. Her death and the inability to grieve properly marked my life for years to come. 

My own personal and family struggles have inspired me to pursue a career in counseling. My service in the U.S. Army and the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I experienced during my deployment in Iraq made me realize the importance of mental health and the lack of resources in our community. Additionally, my son’s struggles with Autism encouraged my husband and I to educate ourselves about the syndrome and support our son. Finally, I witnessed the mental health needs of many children I taught in the Brownsville Independent School District. All of these experiences encouraged me to pursue my career in counseling.

Growing up on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border in a traditional family, I am passionate about providing mental health support to children and families in our community.

My client’s parents tell me their kids are struggling with:

Bullying or “mean girl” fighting at school.

Coping with anxiety symptoms with school, friendships, and peer pressure.

Handling family situations such as a divorce or the death of a loved one.

I help my clients by:

Encouraging them to use play, art, and sand tray therapy as a way to talk about their emotions.

Teaching them problem-solving skills and “how to stand up for themselves”

Helping them process the trauma that they have experienced through the use of EMDR.
